We can defend ourselves against terrorists without surrendering our liberties or sacrificing our values. In the past our nation has faced greater challenges than those we face today. Yet, for over two hundred years our nation has persevered.
In our current conflict, our government has committed shameful abuses: the use of torture, secret detentions and, in some cases, beatings resulting in death. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay stain our national honor.
During an earlier conflict, President Roosevelt reminded us “The only thing to fear is fear itself.” Let's stop being afraid and be the strong, resilient people we have always been.
In their grab for power, President Bush and the Republican presidential candidates are tying to scare the American people. Unlike Roosevelt, today’s president plays on the fears of the American people to acquire police state powers unparalleled in American history. He is succeeding.
Instead of offering genuine protection, such as securing our borders, ports and nuclear facilities, the administration, with the blessing of Congress, has vastly expanded the powers of the executive branch to spy on Americans without first showing probable cause for obtaining a warrant. This is a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution and the original intent of the founding fathers. Considering this administration’s track record, the potential for abuse is obvious.
By the time I get to congress, President Bush will be back on the ranch. Unfortunately, we'll have to clean up the mess. We can't let the next president assume the powers of King George. We have to restore what should be our inalienable rights. I hope you will join in that restoration by supporting me for Congress.
